Sundowns edge Esperance to reach CAF Champions League final

Mamelodi Sundowns moved a step closer to continental glory after securing a 1-0 victory over Espérance de Tunis to reach the CAF Champions League final, completing a 2-0 aggregate win.

The semi-final second leg, played on April 18 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, saw the South African side build on their first-leg advantage to book a place in the final of Africa’s premier club competition.

The decisive moment came in the 35th minute when Sundowns were awarded a penalty after goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said fouled Brayan Leon in the penalty area.

The Colombian forward initially saw his spot-kick saved, but reacted quickly to convert the rebound, giving the hosts the lead on the night and extending their aggregate advantage.

Despite going behind, Esperance showed flashes of attacking threat.

The Tunisian champions came close to pulling a goal back just before half-time when Yan Sasse broke down the left and delivered a dangerous cross that struck Florian Danho before crashing against the crossbar, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams beaten.

Sundowns, however, maintained control for much of the contest, particularly in wide areas where Tashreeq Matthews and Divine Lunga combined effectively to stretch the opposition defence.

Their ability to dictate tempo and create chances ensured Esperance struggled to build sustained momentum.

After the break, the home side continued to press for a second goal. Marcelo Allende and Jayden Adams both tested the Esperance goalkeeper with long-range efforts, but were denied as the visitors attempted to stay in contention.

Esperance pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Sundowns’ defensive discipline and composure saw them safely through to the final.

The result marks another strong showing from the South African champions, who were runners-up in last season’s competition.

Sundowns’ progression highlights the growing dominance of Southern African clubs on the continental stage. Their blend of tactical organisation and attacking quality has once again carried them deep into the tournament.

The victory also reflects the club’s consistency in CAF competitions, having now reached the final with an opportunity to go one step further than last season.

Sundowns will face either AS FAR or RS Berkane in the final, with the Moroccan military side holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg of their semi-final tie.

For Esperance, the defeat ends their campaign despite moments of promise, particularly in attack. Their inability to convert chances proved costly over the two legs.
