Sunderland have reopened negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over a permanent deal for Austrian defender Kevin Danso, according to reporter Sami Mokbel.
The Championship club had initially attempted to sign Danso on loan, but Tottenham rejected that proposal on Friday evening. Sunderland have now returned with discussions focused on a permanent transfer, although the two clubs remain some way from reaching an agreement.
Talks are continuing between Sunderland and Tottenham as they consider whether a deal can be reached over the transfer fee. No fee has yet been agreed, but Danso’s personal terms are not expected to prevent the move if the clubs can settle on the financial details of the transfer.
Tottenham may, however, want to secure a replacement before allowing Danso to leave. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi is understood to be hoping to recruit a defender with Premier League experience, which could influence the timing of any agreement with Sunderland.
Danso joined Tottenham from Lens on loan in January 2025. Tottenham later made the move permanent during the same year, paying £20.9m for the defender.
The latest development represents a change in approach from Sunderland, whose original proposal was based on another temporary arrangement. With that offer turned down, the club are now attempting to negotiate a full transfer for the Austrian international.
For the moment, the discussions remain at an early stage. Sunderland’s interest is clear, but Tottenham’s need to consider their defensive options before approving a departure means the deal is dependent on more than an agreement over Danso’s personal terms.
Mokbel’s report indicates that the negotiations are active, rather than complete. A transfer fee must still be settled, and Tottenham’s plans for a replacement could become a key part of the process before Danso is permitted to move to Sunderland.
Danso’s recent history means both clubs are familiar with his contractual situation. He first arrived at Tottenham in January 2025 from Lens on loan, before Tottenham turned that arrangement into a permanent transfer later in 2025 for £20.9m. Sunderland are now seeking to take over his services on a permanent basis.
