Rassie Erasmus has released five Springboks back to their provincial unions as South Africa step up preparations for their looming Test series against New Zealand, billed as “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry”.
The move comes as Erasmus confirmed a 43-man national squad for the next phase of the international season, with the released players expected to feature in midweek fixtures for their franchises against touring New Zealand sides.
Ntuthuko Mchunu, Evan Roos, Andre-Hugo Venter, Jaco Williams and Embrose Papier have all been sent back to their respective teams in what appears to be a coordinated effort to sharpen domestic combinations while managing national squad depth.
Stormers boosted for All Blacks visit
Front-rower Ntuthuko Mchunu, powerful loose forward Evan Roos and hooker Andre-Hugo Venter rejoin the Cape Town-based Stormers.
Their return provides coach John Dobson with added firepower for the Stormers’ clash against an All Blacks touring side on Friday, 7 August.
The presence of three current Springboks is expected to significantly strengthen the Stormers pack, with Roos’s physical carrying and Mchunu’s scrummaging likely to be central to Dobson’s plans against New Zealand opposition.
Sharks strengthened by debut try-scorer
Electric wing Jaco Williams heads back to the Hollywoodbets Sharks after making an eye-catching Test debut for the Springboks against Wales at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
Williams marked his first appearance in the green and gold with a try, underlining his finishing ability on the international stage.
He will now line up for the Sharks in their meeting with an All Blacks side in Durban on Tuesday, 11 August, where his pace and confidence from that debut performance are expected to be key attacking weapons.
Papier returns to Loftus for Bulls–New Zealand clash
Scrum-half Embrose Papier returns to Pretoria to rejoin the Bulls as they prepare to host New Zealand at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, 15 August.
Papier’s speed around the fringes and rapid delivery from the breakdown are seen as crucial attributes for the Bulls as they aim to unsettle the visitors’ defensive structures and tempo.
His reintegration into the Bulls set-up will also help maintain his match sharpness, with Erasmus likely to call on him again during the Test window if required.
Van Heerden on standby as Boks head to Argentina
Lock Ruben van Heerden, currently with French club Montpellier, is the only player placed on official standby for the Springboks.
He will be drafted into the national squad if there is an injury during training or while the team are in South America.
South Africa face Argentina in Buenos Aires on Saturday, 8 August in a one-off warm-up Test, which will serve as their final hit-out before the “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry” series against New Zealand.
The first Test between the Springboks and the All Blacks is scheduled for Ellis Park on 22 August.
