Sporting CP move closer to signing Senegal defender Ibrahima Ba

Sporting CP are closing in on the signing of Senegalese centre-back Ibrahima Ba, with negotiations over a transfer from FC Famalicão now at an advanced stage.

The 20-year-old defender, who is under contract with Famalicão until June 2030, has attracted strong interest after an impressive rise in Portuguese football, with several clubs across Europe monitoring his situation.

Sporting CP have shown the strongest intent and are preparing a bid believed to be around €15 million to secure the young Senegal international.

Interest in Ba has not been limited to Portugal. French club FC Lorient and unnamed Norwegian sides have also made enquiries about the defender, highlighting his growing reputation across multiple European leagues.

The competition for his signature reflects his status as one of the more highly rated young African defenders currently playing in Portugal, with scouts impressed by his physical presence and defensive maturity at a young age.

While Famalicão are understood to value him highly, journalist Nicolò Schira has reported that Ba has already reached a personal agreement with Sporting CP over a long-term contract running until 2031.

Discussions between the two Portuguese clubs are said to be progressing, with both sides now working towards finalising the terms of a potential transfer.

An earlier valuation placed Ba’s market value at around €3 million, but the level of interest and Sporting’s reported willingness to pay between €12 million and €15 million suggests a significant rise in his perceived value.

Alioune Seck has also previously commented on the player’s development, saying: “Extending Ibrahima Ba’s contract? A logical move towards stability and progression.”

Despite that view, the current situation indicates that a departure is now the most likely outcome, with Sporting positioning themselves ahead of rival clubs in the race.

For Sporting CP, the potential signing forms part of their continued strategy of investing in young talent with long-term resale and sporting value, particularly from African markets where they have previously recruited successfully.

Ba’s expected arrival would strengthen their defensive options as they prepare for both domestic and European campaigns, with the club consistently competing at the top end of Portuguese football.

The defender’s rapid rise has been notable, given his age and relatively recent emergence at senior level. His performances for Famalicão have reportedly convinced Sporting that he is ready for the next step in his career.

For now, the deal remains in progress, but all indications suggest Sporting CP are in pole position to secure one of Africa’s most promising young defenders.
