South Africa’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea in Cairo has added another emphatic result to Bafana Bafana’s record list of biggest wins.
Pitso Mosimane’s side recorded the result on 30 September 2026 in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign, matching two previous five-goal victories against Guatemala and Congo. The result came after South Africa began their Group D campaign with a 2-1 win over Guinea.
South Africa’s largest victory remains their 6-0 triumph over Seychelles on 13 October 2018. The result was achieved in an AFCON qualifier during the nation’s campaign to reach the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bafana Bafana produced a dominant display against the island nation, securing the biggest winning margin among the four results highlighted.
The first of the three 5-0 victories came against Guatemala on 31 May 2010 in an international friendly. South Africa were preparing to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with the match taking place only days before the tournament began.
The 1996 AFCON champions delivered a convincing performance against their Central American opponents as they completed their preparations on home soil.
South Africa produced the same scoreline again more than 14 years later, defeating Congo 5-0 on 11 October 2024 in an AFCON qualifier.
That result formed part of another important qualification campaign and equalled the margin of victory achieved against Guatemala in 2010.
The latest addition came against Eritrea, with Relebohile Mofokeng among the key performers in Cairo. He scored twice, while Oswin Appollis provided three assists as South Africa took control of the match.
The victory means the Eritrea result now stands alongside the wins over Guatemala and Congo as Bafana Bafana’s largest victories by a five-goal margin.
South Africa remain in the early stages of their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign, but the Eritrea performance has already become one of the biggest wins in the national team’s recent history.
