South Africa rise to top of Test rankings as World Test Championship defence continues

South Africa have moved to the top of the ICC Test rankings after completing a 2-1 series victory over Australia, while their World Test Championship (WTC) title defence remains firmly on course.

The Proteas secured the decisive result at Newlands in the Third Test, which concluded on 31 October. The victory lifted Temba Bavuma’s side to second place in the WTC standings, behind New Zealand.

New Zealand currently lead the table with a points percentage of 72.22, according to the ICC. South Africa are just behind on 71.43 after their series success against Australia.

The champions now have a short break before beginning the next stage of their schedule. Bangladesh will visit South Africa for two Tests, with the first taking place from 15-19 November and the second from 23-27 November.

Bangladesh are fifth in the WTC table and also recorded a victory over Australia in August.

South Africa will then face England in the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy. The Proteas are due to host the Three Lions for three games in December, with the series continuing into January 2027.

Their WTC campaign will conclude with an away series against Sri Lanka in February-March 2027.

New Zealand and Australia face demanding run-in

New Zealand have several difficult assignments remaining as they attempt to retain their position at the top of the standings. Their outstanding fixtures are against India, Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Australia’s next opponents will be New Zealand before they begin a five-Test series against India.

That schedule could give South Africa what appears to be a more favourable route to the WTC final, although their own remaining fixtures include Tests against Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka.

The final will be held at The Oval in London from 9-13 June next year.

South Africa won the previous World Test Championship final by defeating Australia.
