Simon Adingra has travelled to Amsterdam to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Ajax, with Sunderland giving the Premier League club permission to complete the transfer.
The Ivory Coast winger is expected to join Ajax on loan for the season, provided he passes his medical. The move would see him follow Mika Godts as the next wide player to feature at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
An agreement in principle has been reached between Ajax and Sunderland, although the deal still needs to be formally completed by the clubs’ lawyers. The medical is understood to be the only remaining obstacle before Adingra’s transfer can be finalised.
De Telegraaf reported: « Bien que l’accord verbal de principe entre l’Ajax et Sunderland doive encore etre formalise par ecrit par les avocats, le club de Premier League a donne son feu vert a l’ailier gauche pour qu’il prenne l’avion ».
Adingra is now on his way to the Netherlands, where the final stages of the proposed move will take place. Thilo Kehrer is also travelling to Amsterdam, with his own medical already scheduled in the Dutch capital.
Ajax are expected to complete the loan deal well before the transfer window closes in Amsterdam. The deadline is 23:59 on Wednesday, leaving the club time to finish the paperwork and register the player.
The Dutch club have secured an option to buy Adingra at the end of the loan. That clause is understood to be worth about €16m (£13.5m), while Ajax will pay €3.8m for the winger’s season-long loan.
The agreement represents a significant move for Ajax, who have won the race for a player wanted by several other clubs. Adingra had attracted interest from a number of Premier League sides, as well as AS Roma and RB Leipzig.
Adingra became African champion with Cote d’Ivoire in 2024. His performances for his country helped establish him as one of the continent’s leading attacking players and contributed to the competition for his signature before Ajax reached an agreement with Sunderland.
The proposed transfer is now dependent on the medical and the formal exchange of documents. If both stages are completed as expected, Adingra will become the latest attacking addition to Ajax before Wednesday night’s deadline.
