Simeone double gives Torino victory in Gilardino’s Parma home debut

Giovanni Simeone scored twice as Torino won 3-0 at Parma to spoil Alberto Gilardino’s first home match in charge at the Tardini.

Che Adams also headed in for Ignazio Abate’s side, who made a decisive start and never surrendered control after Simeone’s fourth-minute opener.

Parma began the match on four points after their 3-0 defeat by Inter. They were without Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, Pontus Almqvist and Elphege, who had undergone surgery for appendicitis. Adrian Bernabe returned to midfield, while Giovanni Fabbian was also selected from the start.

Torino were without Niccolo Fortini and Emirhan Ilkhan despite their previous win against Udinese. Ardian Ismajli replaced Ricardo Rodriguez in defence.

The visitors threatened almost immediately, with Adams seeing a volley blocked inside the opening minute before Saul Coco headed wide from the resulting corner.

Torino took the lead after four minutes. Rafik Belghali lifted a cross into the penalty area and Simeone directed a left-footed finish into the top corner.

Pietro Comuzzo then headed narrowly wide from close range, but Torino extended their advantage in the 24th minute. Simeone’s shot was blocked, and Adams reacted quickest to head the rebound into the net. The goal was checked by VAR for offside and was allowed to stand.

Parma created chances to reduce the deficit before half-time. Lucas Perri produced an excellent diving save to deny David Romero and later collected headers from Diego Carlos and Fabbian.

The hosts came closest just before the interval, when Enrico Delprato sent an effort wide from inside the six-yard box.

Gilardino responded by making two substitutions at half-time, introducing Dominik Drobnic and Simone Lontani. El Bilal Toure headed just wide, while Lontani fired over the crossbar.

Perri also saved attempts from Bernabe and Mariano Troilo as Parma continued to search for a route back into the match. Sascha Britschgi was booked for diving, and Romero curled an effort narrowly beyond the far post.

Torino effectively settled the contest in the 69th minute. Simeone collected a headed pass from Belghali before striking powerfully from distance into the top corner to complete his double.

Parma substitute Matija Frigan appeared to have scored from Djibril Diallo’s pass, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. Perri later dealt comfortably with Frigan’s effort after the forward had made a solo run.

The result left Torino with a convincing away victory, while Parma’s first home game under Gilardino ended in a second successive 3-0 defeat.

Simeone 4, 69 (T); Adams 24 (T)
