Senegal’s Cheikh Tidiane Thiam scores and assists on dream Villarreal debut

Senegalese midfielder Cheikh Tidiane Thiam enjoyed a memorable first appearance for Villarreal’s senior team, marking his debut with a goal and an assist in a 3-1 pre-season victory over PSV Eindhoven.

The 20-year-old emerged as the standout performer after coming off the bench to inspire the Spanish club’s comeback following their recent friendly defeat to Benfica.

Thiam’s impressive contribution has strengthened his case for a place in Villarreal’s first-team squad ahead of the new season and highlighted another promising African talent making strides in European football.

Villarreal had entered the match looking to respond after a 2-0 loss to Benfica earlier in pre-season, and it was the Senegalese midfielder who played a decisive role in ensuring the Yellow Submarine returned to winning ways.

Introduced in the 59th minute for his senior debut, Thiam wasted little time making an impact.

Just seven minutes after entering the pitch, he was involved in the move that produced Villarreal’s opening goal. His intelligent play helped create the opportunity for Georges Mikautadze, who found the back of the net in the 66th minute to give the Spanish side the lead.

The Senegalese youngster was not finished.

In the 72nd minute, Thiam crowned his outstanding debut by scoring Villarreal’s second goal. The move began with Carlos Romero before Thiago Fernández supplied the final pass, allowing the midfielder to finish confidently and put his side firmly in control.

PSV briefly threatened a comeback three minutes later when captain Mauro Júnior reduced the deficit with a strike from the left side of the penalty area after sustained pressure.

However, Villarreal responded almost immediately.

Substitute Pau Cabanes restored the two-goal advantage just a minute later, finishing with his left foot after goalkeeper Luiz Júnior’s long pass turned into an assist.

The quick response effectively ended PSV’s hopes of mounting a comeback as Villarreal comfortably managed the closing stages of the match.

While the Spanish club’s victory will please the coaching staff, much of the attention is likely to focus on Thiam’s impressive introduction.

The midfielder joined Villarreal in 2025 after developing his game in Senegal, where he trained with Cambérène before continuing his progress at Oslo FA.

His steady rise continued last season with Villarreal’s reserve side, where he made 26 appearances while further establishing himself as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
