Patrick Vieira has described becoming Senegal head coach as an “absolute dream”, saying his decision to take charge of the Teranga Lions was driven by his connection to the country where he was born.
The 50-year-old was unveiled as Senegal’s new coach in Dakar on Friday, beginning his first international managerial role after spells in club football in England, France, the United States and Italy.
Vieira succeeds Pape Thiaw and takes charge of a Senegal side that has established itself among Africa’s leading football nations in recent years.
The former Arsenal midfielder, who was born in Senegal and whose parents were also born there, said the appointment represented a return home.
“Being head coach of the Senegal national team is an absolute dream,” he told a news conference in Dakar. “I was born here, my parents were born here, and it really is a homecoming.
“From the very first meetings I had with the [Senegal football federation] president, I accepted this challenge straight away, because there was also an exceptional generation of players.
“I realise the expectations of the people – all 20 million Senegalese. And I know that with the experience I have, with the determination I have, I’ll be able to see this project through.”
Vieira arrives with significant expectations surrounding the Senegal team.
The Teranga Lions won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Morocco in January.
However, the final remains subject to a legal dispute after Senegal players and staff walked off in protest at a penalty decision.
The trophy was subsequently handed to Morocco in March, with the final destination now to be determined by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Senegal’s most recent World Cup campaign also ended in dramatic circumstances.
At the 2026 World Cup, the Lions were eliminated in the last 32 after surrendering a 2-0 advantage against Belgium after 85 minutes. Belgium eventually won 3-2 following extra time.
Vieira believes those recent achievements have changed the expectations surrounding Senegal.
“Today, Senegal is among the major nations in world football,” Vieira said.
“Senegal’s objectives aren’t what they were 10 or 15 years ago. On the back of its recent results, Senegal has moved forward, has reached new levels.
“The demand for results has also stepped up. We need to lay solid foundations.”
The new coach says he does not intend to discard the foundations established by his predecessor or the Senegal Football Federation.
Instead, Vieira wants to develop the existing identity of the national team while introducing his own ideas.
Vieira plans to build a team with “a very precise structure” capable of playing with “intensity and aggression”.
“What matters to me isn’t starting again from scratch,” he added.
“It’s about respecting what the federation has put in place over the last few years and building the next stage, opening a new chapter.
The appointment gives Vieira his first opportunity to manage a national team after a coaching career spent entirely at club level.
He previously managed New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa.
