Senegal forward Sarr emerges as Palace new ‘Zaha’ amid tough run-in

Crystal Palace are entering a defining stretch of their season, with a demanding run of fixtures across domestic and European competitions—but amid the pressure, Senegal international Ismaila Sarr is emerging as a central figure in the club’s attacking identity.

The London side face a congested April schedule, including a UEFA Conference League quarter-final against Fiorentina, alongside key Premier League matches against Newcastle United, West Ham United and Liverpool.

With the stakes rising, Palace manager Oliver Glasner will be looking to his most influential players to deliver and Sarr appears to be leading that charge.

The 26-year-old forward has become one of Palace’s most decisive performers this season, stepping up at a time when the team’s attack has struggled for consistency.

With striker Jean-Philippe Mateta managing just eight league goals so far, Sarr’s contribution has provided a vital spark.

Signed from Watford, the Senegalese winger has grown into a pivotal role at Selhurst Park, drawing comparisons to club legend Wilfried Zaha.

Known for his direct running and ability to unsettle defenders, Sarr has added end product to his game, recording 15 goals in all competitions this season.

His impact has not gone unnoticed within the club. Glasner has praised his forward play, highlighting his ability to be “direct” and take on defenders with confidence, qualities that once defined Zaha’s influence during his time at Palace.

Zaha, who left the club in 2023, remains a towering figure in Palace history.

Over 458 appearances, he scored 90 goals and provided 54 assists, earning recognition as the club’s greatest-ever player.

Former manager Ian Holloway once described him as a player who could “almost do anything”, a standard that few have matched since his departure.

Now, Sarr is beginning to carry that responsibility. Like Zaha, he first made his mark in English football in the lower divisions before establishing himself at the highest level.

His current form suggests he could become the club’s next attacking talisman.

With 79 appearances for Palace so far, he has already contributed 27 goals and 10 assists, underlining his growing influence within the squad.

His ability to deliver in big moments has helped Palace remain competitive, both in the league and in Europe.

With Palace aiming to climb into the top half of the Premier League and make a deep run in Europe, much may depend on whether their Senegalese star can maintain his form during this crucial period.
