Moussa Niakhate has been released from the Senegal squad after suffering an injury, ruling him out of Sunday’s friendly against Comoros at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome.
The Olympique Lyonnais defender underwent an MRI scan in Marseille on Thursday morning before being allowed to return to his club. The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) confirmed his withdrawal but did not disclose the nature of the injury or how long he is expected to be unavailable.
“Our player Moussa Niakhate, who is injured, underwent an MRI this morning in Marseille. Following the examinations, Patrick Vieira decided to release him,” the FSF said.
“The defender is therefore unavailable for Senegal-Comoros, scheduled for 4 October at the Velodrome, and will return to his club to continue his medical care. The FSF wishes him a speedy recovery.”
Niakhate’s absence is a significant setback for Senegal manager Patrick Vieira, who has placed considerable responsibility on the 30-year-old since taking charge of the national side.
The defender wore the captain’s armband in Senegal’s first two matches under Vieira, against Mozambique and Ethiopia. It remains unclear whether he was being considered as an alternative to the absent Sadio Mane or had become Vieira’s preferred choice as captain on the pitch.
Either way, his selection reflected the coach’s confidence in a player who previously represented Nottingham Forest and has regularly captained his club since his twenties. Vieira appears to regard Niakhate as an experienced figure capable of helping guide the next generation of Lions players.
His withdrawal therefore deprives Senegal not only of a key member of their defence but also of one of the team’s emerging leaders.
The Lions will now have to make adjustments before facing Comoros on Sunday afternoon at the Stade Velodrome. The friendly is intended to give Vieira further time to develop his side following his opening matches in charge of Senegal.
Niakhate’s absence could create an opportunity for another defender to establish himself within Vieira’s new pecking order. The Senegal captain’s immediate priority, however, will be to recover as quickly as possible before returning to Lyon to continue his treatment.
He will then hope to rejoin a Senegal squad in which Vieira has already entrusted him with an important role at a future international gathering.
