Orlando Pirates could hand new signing Sebastian Pedersen his debut when they travel to face AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership this week, with the Norwegian striker one of the possible changes to the Buccaneers’ attack.
Pirates will be seeking an improved performance as they begin a demanding period of away fixtures. The match is their first trip outside Soweto this season and the opening game of back-to-back away matches this week.
Their opponents, AmaZulu, are preparing for the second of three successive home fixtures. With their cup campaign ending at the first hurdle, Usuthu can now focus fully on their league programme.
The fixture will also bring Betway Premiership football back to King’s Park. Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu are meeting at the historic venue for the first time in more than five years.
Pedersen’s arrival has increased Pirates’ attacking options at a time when the club are short of recognised strikers. Evidence Makgopa is expected to be sidelined for several months, leaving Yanela Mbuthuma and Boitumelo Radiopane as the club’s established options in that position.
That could create an opportunity for Pedersen to lead the line against AmaZulu and offer an early indication of what he can contribute to the team. His inclusion would represent one of the most notable changes to the expected Pirates line-up.
A win would take Orlando Pirates to the top of the table, although they would need to better their rivals’ goal difference to move into first place.
Pirates have enjoyed the stronger record in this fixture in recent seasons and are unbeaten in their past 11 meetings with Arthur Zwane’s side. Their attacking approach could pose a significant problem for AmaZulu, although the hosts may feel more confident with Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi missing.

At the top end of the pitch, Yanela Mbuthuma may be partnered by Pedersen, who is in contention for his first appearance since joining Orlando Pirates.
