Scott McTominay says he is “fine” and expects to be out for only a few weeks after confirming he is due to undergo surgery for a minor, benign heart arrhythmia.
The 27-year-old Napoli midfielder was speaking at the Serie A awards ceremony on Wednesday night, an event regarded as Italy’s equivalent of the PFA Player of the Year awards.
McTominay told reporters: “I’m fine. This operation is something the club and I have been planning for a long time.
“We had already discussed it during pre-season. I will be out for a few weeks.”
An arrhythmia causes the heart to beat irregularly from time to time. McTominay is expected to undergo a procedure known as pulsed field ablation, which uses electrical pulses to destroy the area of the heart responsible for the abnormal rhythm.
The Scotland international is expected to miss weeks rather than months, but his recovery period will rule him out of the first four matches under new Scotland manager Steve Clarke.
The Scotland national team offered its support in a short message on social media, posting: “Get well soon, Scott. Hope to see you in a Scotland shirt again soon.”
McTominay has started both of Napoli’s Serie A matches so far this season. He completed the full 90 minutes in the opening-day 2-0 victory over Genoa before playing 56 minutes against Como last Sunday.
His absence will be a setback for Napoli, where he has established himself since joining the club in 2024. Before moving to Italy, McTominay made 255 appearances for Manchester United.
The midfielder rose to prominence during his time at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho. Asked this week whether he could ever reunite with the Portuguese manager, McTominay said: “If Jose Mourinho called me to join Real Madrid, honestly, I would consider it.”
For now, McTominay’s immediate priority is to complete his recovery and return to action for Napoli as quickly as possible.
He also reassured supporters in a message to the club, writing: “See you soon, Napoli. I won’t be long.”
