SC Freiburg join Bayer Leverkusen in interest for Relebohile Mofokeng

SC Freiburg have become the second Bundesliga club linked with a move for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and South Africa winger Relebohile Mofokeng.

Interest from Bayer Leverkusen had been reported in recent weeks, while German publication Fussball News says SC Freiburg are now also monitoring the 22-year-old. Dutch club AZ Alkmaar are reportedly competing for his signature.

“German Bundesliga sides Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg are reportedly monitoring the 22-year-old South African international, who currently plays for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise,” Fussball News reported.

Mofokeng, who was born in Sharpeville, has made an impressive start to his European career after leaving the Betway Premiership as its Player of the Season.

He joined Belgian Pro League champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise from Orlando Pirates in July 2026 in a €3.5 million transfer, following an outstanding final campaign with the South African league champions.

The winger immediately made an impact in Belgium, scoring a decisive penalty on his debut against Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup. His spot-kick helped Union SG secure victory in the match.

Since then, Mofokeng has continued to develop under coach David Hubert, with his performances highlighting his ability to operate in several attacking roles.

He has scored five goals and provided four assists in his first 15 appearances for the Belgian club. His form has also carried over into European competition, where he found the net on his UEFA Europa League debut against Viktoria Plzen.

Mofokeng was subsequently nominated for the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Month award for October, further recognition of his early impact in Belgium.

His progress at club level has been matched by his performances for South Africa. The winger has played an important role in Bafana Bafana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

One of his most influential displays came away against Eritrea, when he scored twice to help South Africa claim a crucial victory. The brace reinforced his growing importance to the national side and his place in Bafana Bafana’s attack.

Mofokeng’s form for both Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and South Africa has established him as one of the country’s leading young attacking talents, with Bayer Leverkusen, SC Freiburg and AZ Alkmaar now reported to be tracking his progress.
