Francesco Acerbi is attracting interest from several Serie A clubs after leaving Internazionale, with Sassuolo and Bologna reportedly considering moves for the experienced defender. The 38-year-old has also been offered to Napoli as the club assesses possible defensive reinforcements.
Acerbi became a free agent this summer after his contract with Internazionale expired. Bologna are looking to strengthen their defence and have added the Italy centre-back to their list of possible targets, although they are also pursuing other options, including Nathan Gassama.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bologna’s initial plan was to recruit a left-footed centre-back who would not necessarily be expected to become an immediate starter. The intention was to continue the development of the young defenders the club have signed over the past two years.
The club are now considering whether to adjust that approach by bringing in a more experienced player with strong leadership qualities. Acerbi would fit that profile, given his extensive Serie A experience and reputation for performing in high-pressure matches.
His experience could make him a significant presence in Bologna’s defence, particularly as the club weighs the value of adding a senior figure to a group containing several younger players.
The report states: “Acerbi’s name quickly entered discussions. This is just an initial idea, and the club is still weighing the pros and cons.”
One of the main obstacles could be Acerbi’s financial demands. His previous annual salary at Internazionale was approximately 3 million euros, a figure that Bologna would find difficult to match. It is therefore unclear whether the club and player could reach an agreement on personal terms.
Bologna are not the only Serie A side showing interest. Acerbi’s former club Sassuolo are also considering the possibility of bringing him back. The defender spent five years with Sassuolo, and a return would offer him the chance to rejoin a familiar environment.
Napoli have also been alerted to Acerbi’s availability, with the former Internazionale player reportedly put forward to the club as it examines its options in defence.
Acerbi’s next destination remains undecided, but his availability as a free agent has made him a potentially attractive option for clubs seeking experience without paying a transfer fee. Bologna must decide whether his leadership and Serie A pedigree justify the financial commitment, while Sassuolo could offer the appeal of a return to a club where he previously spent a significant period of his career.
