Sampdoria have parted company with Bernardo Corradi after a poor opening to their Serie B campaign, with Marco Giampaolo the leading candidate to take charge.
The former Italy striker’s dismissal follows Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat by Arezzo at the Ferraris. It was Sampdoria’s fifth defeat in their first seven league matches, leaving the Blucerchiati bottom of Serie B on four points.
Sampdoria are level on points with Catanzaro, but sit at the foot of the table. Their latest loss was met by strong jeers from the home supporters, increasing the pressure on Corradi and the club’s hierarchy.
A statement from Sampdoria said: “U.C. Sampdoria announces that it has relieved Bernardo Corradi of his duties as first-team coach. The club wishes to thank Corradi for the dedication he showed during his time with the Blucerchiati.”
The club also confirmed the departure of assistant coach Massimo Mutarelli and technical collaborator Stefano Fiore. Sampdoria said the identities of the incoming head coach and staff “will be announced in the coming hours”.
Giampaolo is the clear favourite to replace Corradi and would begin a third spell in charge of the club. He first managed Sampdoria in Serie A between 2016 and 2019, before returning to the role in January 2022.
That second spell lasted until October of the same year. A return would therefore see Giampaolo take charge of Sampdoria again as the club attempt to recover from their difficult start to the current Serie B season.
Giampaolo was most recently in charge of Cremonese. He replaced Davide Nicola there in March, while Nicola took over at Venezia last week.
