Russia will face Nigeria in a friendly at the Sovcombank Arena in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, as both sides conclude the first international break of the 2026/27 season.
Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 GMT. The match will be shown in Russia on Channel One and in Africa on AfroSport TV.
Russia remain suspended from official FIFA and UEFA competitions, but continue to arrange preparation matches against a range of international opponents. Nigeria, meanwhile, are using their trip to Europe to assess players and improve their collective performance.
The fixture will be only the second meeting between the two national teams. Their previous encounter also took place in a friendly, on 6 June 2025, when the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Form guide
Russia are ranked 34th in the FIFA rankings and go into the game on a run of four successive victories without conceding a goal. Their latest result was a 6-0 win against Namibia on 3 October 2026, while they also recorded a 2-0 victory over Iran.
That sequence follows a 1-0 defeat by Egypt at the end of May, but Russia’s recent defensive record has since been a notable strength.
Nigeria are 39th in the world rankings and have produced mixed results in their recent fixtures. The Super Eagles beat Madagascar 2-1 in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, before losing 2-1 to Portugal and drawing 2-2 with Poland. Their most recent result was a 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau.
Russia’s recent run gives them the psychological advantage before the meeting, particularly because of their four consecutive wins and their disciplined defence. However, Valeri Karpin’s side are expected to face a demanding physical test against a Nigeria team known for its athleticism and intensity.
Africafoot’s prediction is a 2-1 victory for Russia.
The betting odds listed for the match are 1.83 for a Russia win, 3.50 for a draw and 4.70 for a Nigeria victory.
