Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is confident Harry Kane and Michael Olise will stay at Bayern Munich for the long term and believes Kane has the strongest case among the club’s candidates for the Ballon d’Or.
Rummenigge, a member of Bayern Munich’s supervisory board, said both players wanted to continue with the German champions. He also expressed hope that Kane would soon extend his contract, with Olise potentially following him.
“Both intend to stay at Bayern for a long time,” Rummenigge told German website ran. “I hope, and I am also very confident, that Harry will extend his contract soon. Michael should be next. I would like to see him remain at Bayern for many more years.”
Kane’s current agreement runs until 30 June 2027, although discussions over a new deal began before the start of the current season. Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has described the negotiations as “very harmonious”.
Sky Sport Germany reported that one option under consideration would extend Kane’s contract until 2029. However, no agreement has been announced.
Olise is already contracted to Bayern Munich until 2029 after establishing himself as an important player for the club.
Rummenigge said Bayern were fortunate to have two players among the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award.
“We at Bayern Munich can consider ourselves very lucky to have two players, Harry Kane and Michael Olise, among the leading candidates for the Ballon d’Or,” he said. “They are world-class players, and world-class players do not grow on trees. They have both been very important figures for us for some time.”
Rummenigge, who is the last Bayern player to win the Ballon d’Or, wants Kane or Olise to end that wait for the club. He won the award in consecutive years, in 1980 and 1981.
“I was the last Bayern player to win the award, so I would like to see another Bayern player lift it now,” he added. “That would be especially important for us as a club.”
Asked which factor should determine the winner, Rummenigge identified individual performances as the key measure and backed Kane’s record.
“The decisive criterion is individual performance, and Harry Kane has the advantage in that regard,” he said. “His goals and trophies speak for themselves.”
Rummenigge served as Bayern Munich’s chief executive from 2002 to 2021 before returning to the club’s supervisory board in May 2023.
