Rose praises Bournemouth’s patience after first Premier League victory

Marco Rose praised Bournemouth’s patience and determination after the Cherries secured their first Premier League win of the season by beating 10-man Sunderland 2-0 at Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth have now lost only one of their past 15 home matches in all competitions, recording six wins and eight draws during that run.

Marcus Tavernier put the hosts ahead in the sixth minute, throwing himself at the ball to score with a diving header. Sunderland’s task became even harder when Kevin Danso was shown a straight red card for bringing down Evanilson as the last defender.

Robin Roefs kept Sunderland in the match with a series of excellent saves to deny Rayan and Evanilson. But the Bournemouth forward eventually secured the points when he intercepted an underhit back pass from Omar Alderete, rounded Roefs and finished into an empty net.

The result came in response to Bournemouth’s 5-1 defeat by Chelsea last week, with Rose’s side producing 29 shots during a dominant performance.

“Congrats to everyone at the club, to the lads, to our fans. They were really patient the last couple of weeks, even [though] we didn’t get the points out of the game. Important win,” said Rose.

“We were quite sharp in these kinds of moments and that’s why we have a clean sheet, we scored two goals and we won the game.

“We were quite dominant, we were intense. I felt even in the locker room and yesterday in training that we wanted to force this win with everything we have. It’s a mentality.”

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris, meanwhile, was frustrated by his team’s lack of attacking threat. The visitors managed only three attempts, with those efforts carrying a combined expected goals value of 0.07.

The defeat was Sunderland’s fourth in a row in the Premier League. It is their longest losing sequence in the competition since they suffered five successive defeats in December 2015 under Sam Allardyce.

“Tough game, disappointing game, really clear,” said Le Bris.

“We were below the level, it’s really clear. It’s hard to take, hard to digest. It’s very painful because we were not Sunderland and it’s not acceptable.

“We will have ups and downs in the season, this one is a big down. I’m very disappointed for the fans.

“They were with us until the last minute, but they were not on the pitch, which is a big problem in the Premier League because the opponent is strong.”
