Roma revive Rafael Leao interest as Matias Soule loan swap is considered

Roma have renewed their interest in Milan forward Rafael Leao and are exploring whether a loan exchange involving Matias Soule could help bring the Portugal international to the Giallorossi before the summer transfer window closes.

According to Calciomercato.com, Leao has recently been placed on Roma’s list of transfer targets again, following the club’s earlier interest in the forward reported in late July. With the deadline approaching, Roma are examining whether a deal involving Soule could make the move financially more manageable for both clubs.

No formal negotiations have begun and the proposal remains speculative. However, the possibility of a loan arrangement involving Leao and Soule could offer a way around the financial difficulties that have so far prevented progress.

Leao’s wages are regarded as the principal obstacle. His salary would represent a significant commitment for Roma, but including Soule in a temporary exchange could help reduce the immediate cost of the agreement and potentially provide Milan with a player they may value.

For the deal to advance, Milan’s position will be decisive. Throughout the summer, the Rossoneri have maintained that they want either a permanent transfer for Leao or a paid loan that includes an obligation for the buying club to complete the move.

Milan initially valued Leao at €60m but have since lowered their asking price to about €45m. Galatasaray previously made an offer worth €35m plus add-ons, although that proposal did not meet Milan’s valuation of the player.

Roma’s renewed interest therefore comes as the club considers whether a loan swap can bridge the gap between Milan’s demands and the financial limits created by Leao’s wages. The structure could also allow both sides to avoid an immediate permanent transfer, although Milan’s insistence on a guaranteed purchase remains a key issue.

At this stage, there is no completed agreement, and the clubs have not formally opened talks. Any move would also require the approval of Leao, Soule, Roma and Milan before the transfer deadline.

Calciomercato.com reports that, should all parties reach an agreement before the window shuts, the deal could become one of the most significant transfers in Serie A this summer.
