Santi Denia says Rodri’s ability to anticipate play was clear from his earliest days at Atletico Madrid’s academy, despite the midfielder being one of the smallest players in his youth team at the time.
The Czech Republic coach recalled working with the future Ballon d’Or winner during an interview with the COPE radio programme El Partidazo. His memories came ahead of Saturday’s UEFA Nations League meeting between the Czech Republic and Spain, a match that brought Denia back together with several players he coached in Spain’s youth teams, including Rodri.
Denia was part of Atletico Madrid’s youth structure before joining the Spanish Football Federation. It was there that he first noticed the qualities that would later define Rodri’s career, even though the player’s physical development had not yet caught up with his understanding of the game.
“There was a short kid in the youth team back then, because he was really small, but he always thought a step ahead of everyone else,” Denia said.
He also remembered discussing the youngster with Amorortu, the head of Atletico Madrid’s academy.
“This player is special, but he’s too short,” Denia recalled saying.
Amorortu urged him to wait before drawing conclusions, suggesting that Rodri’s height could change as he matured.
“Look at his parents. We have to wait for him to grow,” he replied.
Denia later worked with Rodri again when he coached Spain’s Under-17 side. The midfielder had previously made his Spain Under-16 debut against Switzerland, at a stage when his physical development was still incomplete.
“He was a short kid, but he was the best, he understood everything,” Denia said.
The coach focused in particular on Rodri’s capacity to read situations before they developed. That anticipation, he said, was already evident in the young player and would eventually become one of the qualities that helped him win the Ballon d’Or.
Rodri’s prospects at Atletico Madrid were not universally clear at the time, and he moved to Villarreal in June 2013. He continued his development through Villarreal’s youth and reserve teams before progressing into professional football.
He later grew to more than 1.90 metres and went on to return to Atletico Madrid. Rodri subsequently established himself at Manchester City and recently joined Barcelona, while also becoming an important member of the Spain national team.
