Riyad Mahrez is reportedly prioritising a return to La Liga as he considers the next and potentially final major move of his playing career.
The 35-year-old Algerian winger has been without a club since leaving Al-Ahli and is understood to be determined to continue playing in Europe rather than return to the Saudi Pro League.
Mahrez retired from international football after making 119 appearances for Algeria and scoring 40 goals. He is now reportedly targeting Spain, with a move to La Liga his preferred option.
Deportivo interest disputed
Deportivo La Coruña had been linked with a move for Mahrez, with reports suggesting the newly promoted club were interested in adding the experienced winger to a squad that already includes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traoré.
However, that claim has since been disputed.
Spanish football insider Juan Arrien reported that Deportivo were interested in Mahrez, but transfer specialist Matteo Moretto subsequently denied the information. According to Moretto, the Galician club’s current priority is strengthening their defence, with a central defender their main target.
That could leave Mahrez without one of the more realistic routes back to Spain.
Saudi offers rejected
Despite the uncertainty surrounding a potential La Liga destination, Mahrez is reportedly not considering a return to Saudi Arabia at this stage.
Al-Shabab are said to have shown interest and could offer the Algerian an annual salary of around €10 million. However, journalist Mohamed Al-Hamad reports that there are currently no official negotiations between the two parties.
Al-Ettifaq have also reportedly made an offer on similar financial terms, while UAE club Al-Wasl are understood to be monitoring the situation.
Financially attractive proposals have therefore emerged, but Mahrez’s preference remains Europe.
Waiting for the right opportunity
Mahrez enjoyed a highly successful spell at Manchester City after establishing himself in English football with Leicester City. His technical ability, creativity and experience at the highest level continue to make him an attractive option despite his age.
However, his desire to return to La Liga could limit his options if clubs in Spain are not prepared to meet his expectations.
For now, Mahrez remains a free agent and is waiting for the right opportunity in Spain. With his preferred destination becoming increasingly clear, the coming weeks could determine whether the former Manchester City star gets his desired final European challenge or ultimately has to consider offers from elsewhere.
