Renato Sanches is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, with the French champions prepared to terminate the Portugal midfielder’s contract two years before it is due to expire.
The 29-year-old is tied to Paris Saint-Germain until June 2027, but journalist Sebastien Denis reports that the club is willing to release him without a fee if he secures a new destination and can continue his career elsewhere.
Sanches has spent the past three seasons away from Paris Saint-Germain on loan, representing Roma, Benfica and Panathinaikos in consecutive temporary moves. He is not part of Luis Enrique’s plans and is now expected to move on permanently.
The midfielder has already rejected approaches from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer, according to the same report, because he wants to remain in European football.
Interest has emerged from several clubs across the continent. Two unnamed teams in France are reportedly monitoring the situation, while Ipswich Town and Hull City have also been linked with the Portugal international. Germany’s Union Berlin is another club said to be interested.
A move to England would represent a return for Sanches, who previously spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Swansea City. He could now have the opportunity to revive his career in the country after a difficult spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where successive loan departures have limited his involvement with the first team.
Sanches became one of European football’s most highly regarded young midfielders after making his senior breakthrough with Benfica. His performances earned him international recognition with Portugal, and he was part of the squad that won UEFA Euro 2016.
However, his career has since been disrupted by injuries and inconsistent club form. His latest loan spells at Roma, Benfica and Panathinaikos have left him outside Luis Enrique’s plans at Paris Saint-Germain, despite the remaining length of his contract.
The next stage of his career will depend on whether he chooses to stay in France, move to England or join Union Berlin in Germany. Paris Saint-Germain’s willingness to end the agreement means Sanches could become available without a transfer fee, provided he agrees terms with a new club.
