Renato Sanches enters free agency after Paris Saint-Germain spell

Renato Sanches is available to join a new club after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain was officially terminated on Monday evening.

The 29-year-old Portugal midfielder’s departure was reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. The end of the agreement means Sanches has become a free agent and can move to another club without a transfer fee being required.

Paris Saint-Germain signed Sanches from Lille in the summer of 2022 for 15m euros. However, the midfielder was unable to establish himself as a regular member of the Parisian club’s first-team squad.

During his time under contract with Paris Saint-Germain, Sanches spent periods away from the club on loan. He joined Roma and Benfica before spending the previous season in Greece with Panathinaikos.

In total, Sanches made 27 appearances in the colours of the French champions. His time at Paris Saint-Germain therefore ended with the player unable to secure a settled role in the team, leading to the termination of his contract.

Sanches’ next destination has not yet been confirmed, although several clubs are reportedly interested in signing him. Union Berlin are said to be among the teams monitoring the former Lille player.

English clubs Hull City and Ipswich Town have also been named as potential destinations. With Sanches now a free agent, any interested club can negotiate directly with the midfielder rather than agreeing a transfer fee with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Portugal international joined Paris Saint-Germain after his spell with Lille, where he had established himself in French football. His move to the Paris club in 2022 was completed for 15m euros, but his subsequent time in the capital was affected by a lack of regular first-team football.

That led to a sequence of loan moves, beginning with Roma and Benfica and followed by Panathinaikos last season. Sanches has now formally ended his association with Paris Saint-Germain and is free to consider offers from elsewhere.

Union Berlin, Hull City and Ipswich Town are the clubs currently linked with the midfielder, according to the reports cited. No new club has been confirmed for Sanches, who can now complete a move without restrictions attached to his former Paris Saint-Germain contract.
