Malian midfielder Seydou Dembélé has joined French club Stade de Reims, choosing the Ligue 1 side despite reported interest from several major European clubs.
The 18-year-old has moved from the JMG Academy in Bamako and will join Reims’ Révélations Elite group as he continues his development in France.
Dembélé is regarded as one of the promising young players to emerge from Mali and attracted attention after impressing at youth international level.
The midfielder reportedly drew interest from Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, but ultimately opted for Reims as the next step in his career.
Reims confirmed the arrival of the teenager, describing him as a player with significant technical ability and creativity.
Dembélé developed at the JMG Academy in Bamako, one of the prominent youth football institutions in Mali, where he established himself as a technically gifted midfielder.
The left-footed player is capable of operating as an attacking midfielder and has been noted for his ability to influence games through both passing and dribbling.
His vision is another major part of his game, while his technical quality allows him to operate effectively in tight areas and create opportunities for teammates.
Dembélé’s development has already included success on the international stage.
In 2024, he was named the best player at the WAFU A U17 tournament in Senegal. The competition also served as a qualifier for the final phase of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
He subsequently represented Mali at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations a year later, where he was an undisputed starter throughout the tournament.
Mali reached the final of that competition, with Dembélé playing an important role in the team’s run. Their campaign ultimately ended in disappointment when they lost the final to Morocco on penalties.
The midfielder’s performances at youth level further strengthened his reputation and helped attract attention from clubs outside Africa.
Dembélé was also identified as one of the standout young talents at the latest U17 World Cup, where he reportedly finished as the tournament’s leading scorer.
That record has added to the growing expectations surrounding the teenager as he begins the next phase of his career in France.
For Reims, the signing represents an opportunity to develop a player who has already demonstrated his potential at both regional and continental youth competitions.
Rather than immediately moving into a senior first-team environment, Dembélé will initially be part of the Reims Révélations Elite group, where the club can continue to work on his development.
The move also highlights the continued importance of African academies in producing young players capable of attracting attention from leading European clubs.
