Real Madrid produced a stirring second-half comeback to defeat Atletico Madrid in a dramatic and action-packed derby, overturning a first-half deficit before holding on with 10 men to secure all three points.
The visitors made a fast start and nearly took the lead inside nine minutes when a swift attacking move saw an effort strike the inside of the crossbar, denying them an early breakthrough after a burst of pace down the flank.
Despite that early warning, it was Atletico Madrid who struck first in the 33rd minute. A slick passing move involving Matteo Ruggeri and Simeone carved open the defence, allowing Lookman to finish from close range and hand the hosts the advantage with his second league goal of the season.
Atletico went into the break ahead, appearing in control, but the match turned decisively after the restart.
Real Madrid were handed a route back into the contest in the 51st minute when Brahim Diaz was fouled in the penalty area by David Hancko. Vinicius Junior stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the score.
The momentum quickly swung in Real Madrid’s favour. Just three minutes later, Federico Valverde capitalised on a defensive lapse to put his side ahead. A misplaced pass fell kindly, and with the defender slow to react, Valverde seized the opportunity, striking with the outside of his right foot to complete the turnaround.
Atletico responded with changes, introducing Nahuel Molina and Alexander Sorloth in a bid to regain control. Their persistence paid off when Molina found the equaliser in spectacular fashion, unleashing a powerful long-range strike from around 30 yards that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
However, the drama was far from over. Real Madrid regained the lead through Vinicius Junior after a clever attacking move. A run into the box and quick change of direction created space before the ball was switched to the Brazilian, who cut inside and curled a precise finish beyond the goalkeeper.
The closing stages were tense, particularly after Federico was sent off in the 78th minute for a challenge from behind, leaving Real Madrid to defend their lead with a numerical disadvantage.
Atletico pressed for another equaliser, with Julian Alvarez testing the goalkeeper repeatedly, but Real Madrid held firm under pressure to secure the victory.
The result sees Atletico Madrid drop to fourth place in the league standings, now sitting one point behind Villarreal, while Real Madrid leave with momentum following a resilient and hard-fought win.
