Rayan Ait-Nouri’s Algeria return depends on apology and Manchester City game time

Rayan Ait-Nouri’s return to the Algeria squad currently appears highly unlikely, with the defender required to satisfy two conditions before he can be considered for a comeback.

The first is an apology to the Algeria technical staff and the country’s supporters, following his abrupt departure from the national team camp after a clash with manager Brahim Hemdani. Algeria went on to beat Zambia 3-1 without him on 25 September in their opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

According to Winwin, talks are moving towards an amicable resolution. The report says Ait-Nouri is prepared to apologise, while the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is working to settle the dispute and restore a calm working environment for the coaching staff.

The technical team is also reportedly willing to accept an apology from the left-back, suggesting that the first obstacle to his return could be overcome.

The second condition is more difficult and is not directly under the player’s control: Ait-Nouri must regain regular playing time and continuity with Manchester City.

Since the arrival of manager Enzo Maresca at the end of June, the defender has seen his role significantly reduced. He has made only two appearances this season, including one start, and has played 105 minutes in total.

Ait-Nouri has yet to feature in the English league and was left out of the Manchester City squad for Sunday’s sixth-round Premier League meeting with Liverpool, which ended in a 3-0 defeat.

The situation leaves him in a race against time to improve his club prospects before Hemdani names his next Algeria squad. The next list is expected to cover the national team’s fixtures in November, when the Fennecs will face Togo twice in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The two matches are scheduled for 14 November in Tizi-Ouzou and 17 November in Lome.

For now, an agreement between Ait-Nouri and the national team appears possible, but his limited involvement at Manchester City remains a significant barrier to his return. His prospects will depend on whether he can combine a resolution with the Algeria staff with a sustained run of club football before the November fixtures.
