Raphinha is reportedly set to become Barcelona’s first captain for the 2026-27 season, moving ahead of Frenkie de Jong in the club’s proposed leadership order.
Barcelona have not yet officially confirmed their final captaincy hierarchy, but Mundo Deportivo reports that the Brazil forward is currently the leading candidate to take the armband on a permanent basis. The Ballon d’Or’s official website has also reportedly listed Raphinha as Barcelona’s first captain, although the club has yet to endorse that decision publicly.
Barcelona are expected to settle the order of their captains soon, with Raphinha emerging as the preferred choice to lead the list. If the reported arrangement is approved, de Jong would become the club’s second captain.
The Netherlands midfielder is one of the longest-serving members of Barcelona’s current squad and has already worn the armband on several occasions. His experience and established position within the team are expected to make him the next in line for the captaincy.
Pedri, Gavi and Eric Garcia would reportedly complete the senior leadership group. All three players could be asked to take on increased responsibility in the dressing room as Barcelona prepare for the new campaign.
Raphinha has previously captained Barcelona during his time at the club. However, becoming first captain would represent a significant step forward in his standing at the Catalan side, formally recognising the influence he has developed both on and off the field.
The Brazilian has strengthened his position as one of Barcelona’s most important players. His contribution has extended beyond his attacking output, with his personality, commitment and experience helping him become a more influential figure in a squad that includes both established players and younger talent.
The potential change in leadership comes as Barcelona continue planning for the 2026-27 season. The club are also working on possible additions to the squad, including Rodri and Joao Cancelo, as they consider how to shape the team for the next campaign.
For now, the captaincy order remains unconfirmed. Barcelona’s decision is still pending, but Raphinha is reported to be in pole position to become the team’s primary leader, with de Jong expected to serve as his deputy if the proposed structure is finalised.
The appointment would give Raphinha a central role in Barcelona’s on-field leadership and underline the importance he has assumed within the squad. It would also place him at the head of a group that includes de Jong, Pedri, Gavi and Eric Garcia, all of whom are expected to contribute to the team’s leadership structure in the coming season.
