Pressure mounts on Fernando Da Cruz as Kaizer Chiefs struggle for answers

Fernando Da Cruz is facing increasing scrutiny at Kaizer Chiefs after the 1-0 defeat by Red Arrows in Zambia left the club without a win in four matches.

The result has intensified questions over the French coach’s tactical methods and his management of the squad, although Amakhosi still have an opportunity to overturn the deficit in Friday’s second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium and reach the CAF Confederation Cup last 16 group stages.

Kaizer Chiefs remain unbeaten in the Betway Premiership, but a record of three wins and five draws has added to the pressure on Da Cruz. The team’s recent performances have also raised concerns about whether his emphasis on structure is restricting the attacking qualities traditionally associated with the club and South African players.

Organisation can provide a strong foundation, but players also need the freedom to improvise, create chances and bring energy to matches. At present, Kaizer Chiefs’ attacking players appear to be struggling to express themselves within the team’s tactical framework.

The defeat by Red Arrows underlined those concerns. Da Cruz has consistently used a system with three central defenders and two wing-backs, who fall back to form a line of five when the team is defending.

The former AS FAR coach may now need to adjust the balance between tactical discipline and attacking freedom. There are also growing concerns about the players’ body language, with some appearing burdened by their responsibilities and reluctant to take risks for fear of making mistakes.

Da Cruz’s man-management could be central to his prospects at Naturena. He must identify the strengths of his players and give them sufficient freedom to make decisions during matches, rather than requiring them to follow instructions at every moment.

The coach also needs to adapt to the demands of South African football. His experience of football structures in France and Morocco may have shaped his methods, but he must develop an approach suited to the current environment and culture at Kaizer Chiefs.

Communication will be another important consideration. Da Cruz’s limited English may make it more difficult to convey his ideas, but he will need to remain open to different ways of communicating with and motivating the squad. Tactical knowledge will have limited value if the players do not fully understand or cannot execute his plans.

His recent coaching history is also relevant. Da Cruz had not managed a team since 2023, after which he worked as a technical director and later as an instructor within the Moroccan Football Federation. Returning to the dugout brings different pressures, particularly during competitive matches.

At Kaizer Chiefs, the challenge is to ensure that tactical discipline produces results without undermining creativity, individual quality or the players’ confidence.
