Premier League clubs spent almost €4bn during the summer transfer window, more than five times the amount invested by clubs in La Liga, according to estimates reported by Spanish media outlet El Periodico.
The figures underline the widening financial gap between England’s top flight and Spain’s leading division. La Liga clubs spent approximately €750m during the same period.
Transfermarkt’s estimates put total Premier League spending at close to €4bn. Reuters calculated that English clubs’ combined outlay reached a record £3.46bn, highlighting the scale of investment made by teams in the division.
Despite the record spending, Premier League clubs also generated around €2.5bn through player sales, according to Transfermarkt. Their overall net spending was therefore estimated at approximately €1.6bn.
La Liga’s net spending, by comparison, was put at about €253m.
The difference in spending was reflected among Europe’s biggest investors. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were responsible for most of La Liga’s transfer investment, while eight of the 10 highest-spending clubs in Europe came from the Premier League.
The figures do not suggest that Spanish clubs were inactive in the market, but they do show the significantly greater financial capacity of English teams. The overall spending totals are based on estimates from Transfermarkt, while Reuters’ figure for Premier League clubs uses pounds and represents a record total for English clubs.
Premier League teams’ willingness to spend heavily was not removed by the money raised from outgoing transfers. Even after earning approximately €2.5bn from player sales, their combined net expenditure remained close to €1.6bn.
The corresponding figure for La Liga was considerably lower, with clubs recording estimated net spending of around €253m. That left the two leagues separated by roughly €1.35bn in net transfer expenditure.
At club level, the concentration of spending in Spain was largely centred on Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. In England, the breadth of the investment was greater, with eight Premier League clubs included in Europe’s top 10 spenders for the summer.
The contrast adds to the financial disparity between the Premier League and La Liga, with English clubs accounting for the overwhelming majority of Europe’s largest transfer outlays during the window.
