Pitso Dladla has defended Kaizer Chiefs, suggesting injuries and suspensions have played a major role in the team’s recent struggles despite criticism over their form.
Dladla made the remarks after his Durban City side were beaten 1-0 by Chiefs in a Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium last Sunday.
The result saw Chiefs return to winning ways after a difficult run of results, having lost four consecutive matches prior to the victory.
For Durban City, the defeat ended a six-match unbeaten streak across all competitions and marked Dladla’s first loss since taking over in an interim capacity.
Speaking after the match, Dladla pointed to a lack of consistency in Chiefs’ team selection, attributing it to ongoing injury problems and suspensions within the squad.
“Look, honestly, the Chiefs have been so unfortunate with their injuries and suspensions,” said Dladla.
“So, with them, you couldn’t predict which line-up they were going to put for today’s game.
“I think we were surprised with the three starters. I remember [Wandile] Duba that we did not suspect him, [Ashley] Du Preez, we did not suspect them as a third player.
“But for them, also, we should be honest, there are games that they have lost where they played very well.”
Dladla’s comments suggest that while results have not gone in Chiefs’ favour in recent weeks, performances have not always reflected their position, with factors beyond their control contributing to the downturn.
The Soweto-based club has faced scrutiny from supporters and observers during their poor run, but the win over Durban City offers some relief as they look to regain momentum in the league.
For Durban City, the defeat represents a setback after a period of strong form, though their overall run prior to the match indicates progress under Dladla’s interim leadership.
Chiefs’ ability to stabilise their squad selection could prove crucial in the coming weeks as they aim to climb the table and improve consistency.
Meanwhile, Durban City will look to bounce back quickly and resume their push following the end of their unbeaten streak.
As the season continues, both sides face important fixtures that could shape their respective campaigns, with Chiefs seeking to build on their latest win and Durban City aiming to rediscover their earlier form.
