Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic has reportedly resolved the ongoing goalkeeping crisis in the Algerian national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, according to sources familiar with the matter. His decision comes after the conclusion of the team’s Italy training camp and a series of friendlies against Guatemala and Uruguay.
The announcement marks a significant move for a position that has been a source of controversy since the departure of legendary goalkeeper Wahab Raïs M’Bolhi. Fans and observers have expressed doubts over the selection of players for the role, particularly after Petkovic chose two goalkeepers from lower-tier European leagues.
Melvin Mastel, from Swiss club Nyon in the second division, and Anthony Mandrea, playing in France’s third division, were picked over goalkeepers from Algeria’s professional league. The selections triggered criticism from segments of the fanbase, some of whom accused the coach of “systematic exclusion.”
The decision follows the retirement of USM Alger goalkeeper Oussama Benbot from international duty, who reportedly stepped away after being overlooked for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and when Mandrea was preferred over him against Equatorial Guinea.
A source close to the team told WinWin: “Petkovic has settled on the identity of the second goalkeeper in the Algerian national team before the 2026 World Cup, and on his final choices for this global event in the goalkeeping position, after the Italy camp and the observations he made after the friendlies against Guatemala and Uruguay.”
Mastel, who played the full match against Guatemala, impressed Petkovic with his physical presence and composure, alongside his ability to play with his feet, likened to first-choice goalkeeper Luca Zidane. “Petkovic was very impressed with the abilities of the tall goalkeeper and his tremendous physical capabilities,” the source added.
The Swiss coach has reportedly decided that Mastel will be part of Algeria’s three-man goalkeeping squad for the World Cup, alongside Luca Zidane and Mandrea. Petkovic’s approach reflects his willingness to back bold decisions, having recently elevated players such as Zidane, Samir Cherki, Rafik Belghali, and Zinedine Belaid to key roles.
Familiarity with Mastel’s abilities in Switzerland appears to have reinforced Petkovic’s confidence in him, despite the goalkeeper currently playing on loan from Lausanne. Media analysts have suggested that Mastel could move to a higher-level club next season following strong performances this year.
The Italy camp also confirmed Luca Zidane as Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, with consistent performances since the last African Cup of Nations cementing his position. Petkovic is expected to maintain the current goalkeeper roster unless unforeseen circumstances necessitate a change.
