The Spain right-back, a key part of the national team that lifted the World Cup after a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina, played down the controversy that has followed the final in some quarters of the losing nation.
In Argentina, criticism of the match and demands for the final to be replayed have circulated since Spain’s triumph. But Porro stressed the debate has not affected him.
He said he had not paid attention to any of the complaints or proposals to replay the match, describing them as “just things that are said from the outside” and insisting they do not concern him personally.
Porro, who joined Tottenham on a permanent deal after an initial loan spell, was speaking at a moving ceremony held in his honour in Don Benito, where he reflected on both his international success and his club future.
World Cup win ‘has not satisfied’ Porro
The 24-year-old emphasised that winning the World Cup has not dulled his hunger for further success.
“The World Cup title has not satisfied my competitive ambition,” he said. “There is still a lot for me to achieve. I am a player with big ambitions and I am always trying to learn more. Everyone who knows me understands that I am aiming for more.”
Porro explained that the reception in his hometown had left a deep impression on him, and he was keen to share the achievement with those who had supported him from the beginning of his career.
He admitted he had never imagined being honoured in such a way, and highlighted the personal cost of reaching the top level of the game.
Reaching the elite, he said, had required “many sacrifices”, particularly from the moment he had to leave his family home to pursue his football career.
Defender pledges to stay at Tottenham
Addressing his club situation, Porro made clear he plans to remain at Tottenham, where he is under contract and says he is thriving.
He confirmed he would continue at Spurs and described himself as “very happy” at the Premier League side.
While he did not completely close the door on a future return to Spanish football, Porro stressed that his attention is firmly on his present in England and on his role with Tottenham.
He indicated that, although the idea of playing again in Spain at some stage of his career cannot be ruled out, his current focus is solely on performing for his club in the Premier League.
Light-hearted moment with popular grandfather
The event in Don Benito, attended by local fans and well-wishers, also had a lighter side.
Porro joked about the popularity of his grandfather, Antonio Sauseda, suggesting that the tribute in his hometown was really organised for him rather than for the World Cup winner.
The Spurs defender used the occasion to dedicate his success to everyone who had accompanied him along his journey from Don Benito to the top of the international game, underlining how much the backing of his hometown continues to mean to him.
Despite standing on the back of a World Cup triumph, Porro repeatedly returned to the theme of ambition and progression, positioning his victory with Spain not as a final destination but as a step in a career he still believes has much further to go.
