Patrick Vieira has reportedly reached an agreement to become the next head coach of Senegal, although the Senegalese Football Federation is not expected to announce the appointment immediately.
Vieira has been in Senegal since 29 July and is understood to have impressed officials with his plans and ambitions for the national team, the Lions of Teranga.
The former France international reportedly held a working session with the federation’s Secretary General, during which his vision for the team was discussed. The meeting is said to have strengthened the federation’s interest in appointing Vieira.
However, despite the reported agreement between the two sides, the Senegalese Football Federation, known as the FSF, is understood to want to delay making the deal official.
The main issue concerns the current position of Pape Thiaw and a reported financial dispute surrounding compensation owed to the outgoing coach.
The federation is reportedly waiting for Thiaw’s situation to be resolved before confirming Vieira as his successor. No announcement is expected until the matter has been settled.
Thiaw’s departure therefore remains an important step before the federation can formally begin a new era under Vieira.
The situation could create a delay to the appointment even though discussions with Vieira appear to have reached a successful conclusion.
According to the report, the FSF has already considered an alternative arrangement in case the financial dispute cannot be resolved in time.
If the issue involving Thiaw remains unsettled, the federation is reportedly prepared to place the national team under the temporary control of its National Technical Director.
That interim arrangement could begin in September, allowing the federation additional time to resolve the outstanding matter before making a permanent appointment.
Vieira’s reported agreement would represent a major change in direction for Senegal as the federation considers the next stage of the Lions of Teranga’s development.
The former France midfielder has extensive experience at the highest level of football and has now apparently convinced Senegalese officials that his plans are suitable for the national team.
His presence in Senegal since 29 July has allowed discussions to take place directly, including the working session with the federation’s Secretary General that reportedly helped officials assess his ambitions and ideas.
Although the details of Vieira’s proposed role have not been made public in the supplied report, the federation is said to have been impressed enough by his vision to reach an agreement with him.
The remaining uncertainty is therefore not believed to centre on Vieira’s suitability for the job, but rather on the circumstances surrounding Thiaw’s departure.
The FSF’s reluctance to announce the agreement suggests that the financial issue must first be addressed.
Should that happen, Vieira could be formally confirmed as Senegal’s new coach.
If it does not happen quickly enough, however, the National Technical Director is reportedly ready to step in as an interim option from September.
The contingency plan would provide the federation with a temporary solution while negotiations over Thiaw’s compensation continue.
For now, Vieira’s reported agreement remains unofficial, with the FSF choosing to wait before publicly confirming the change.
The coming weeks are therefore expected to determine whether the former France international takes charge of Senegal as planned or whether the national team begins September under an interim coach.
The situation leaves Vieira waiting for formal confirmation, while the federation attempts to resolve the outstanding issue involving Thiaw before launching what could be a new chapter for the Lions of Teranga.
