Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has praised his team after their 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup, declaring: “We have the best team in the world!”
The club’s president made the comment following a result that gave Paris Saint-Germain success against Aston Villa in the European showpiece.
The victory could soon be followed by another opportunity to add silverware to the club’s collection. Paris Saint-Germain will face Lens in the French Super Cup on Sunday, 16 August, just days after their UEFA Super Cup triumph.
The match will give Luis Enrique’s side the chance to claim another trophy and add to the honours already secured by the club. The French Super Cup will also provide a quick return to competitive action for a Paris Saint-Germain team coming off a narrow win against Aston Villa.
Al-Khelaifi’s assessment of the squad was emphatic. His statement that Paris Saint-Germain have “the best team in the world” underlined the confidence surrounding the club after the 2-1 result.
Paris Saint-Germain’s success against Aston Villa was decided by a one-goal margin, but it was enough to deliver victory in the UEFA Super Cup. Attention will now turn to the domestic fixture against Lens, with the next piece of silverware potentially available only a few days later.
Luis Enrique will lead Paris Saint-Germain into that meeting as the club seeks to continue its run of success. The game against Lens takes place on Sunday, 16 August, in the French Super Cup.
For Al-Khelaifi, the result against Aston Villa offered an opportunity to assess the strength of the squad publicly. His “best team in the world” claim came after Paris Saint-Germain had completed their 2-1 win, while the forthcoming match against Lens gives the team an immediate chance to support that confidence with another trophy.
The club therefore moves from one Super Cup fixture to another. After defeating Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup, Paris Saint-Germain will now prepare to meet Lens in the French Super Cup, with Luis Enrique’s team aiming to add further success to its club museum.
