Otele hails ‘dream come true’ after Super Eagles debut

Nigeria winger Philip Otele has described his first appearance for the Super Eagles as a “dream come true” after making his debut in a friendly draw against Jordan.

The 2-2 encounter, played on Tuesday night against Al-Nashama, marked a significant milestone for the Hamburg player, who was introduced late in the game. Otele came on in the 89th minute, replacing Frank Onyeka as Nigeria concluded their participation in a four-nation invitational tournament.

Speaking after the match, Otele expressed his pride at representing his country for the first time, highlighting the personal and family significance of the moment.

“For me, it was a dream come true. We always play football to represent the national team, so I always wanted to play for Nigeria, and it was a big moment for me and my family,” Otele told the Super Eagles media.

The fixture also saw other players earn their first caps, including Emmanuel Fernandez and Yira Collins Sor, as Nigeria used the tournament to introduce fresh talent into the squad. Their inclusion reflects a broader effort to expand the team’s depth ahead of future competitions.

Although Otele’s time on the pitch was brief, his introduction formed part of a wider rotation strategy by the coaching staff, giving new players exposure at international level. The match itself ended in a draw, with both sides scoring twice in a competitive contest.

Otele’s journey to the national team has included a recent move in club football. The winger joined Hamburg on loan in January from Swiss side FC Basel, a step that has helped raise his profile and contributed to his call-up.

His debut is likely to be seen as a stepping stone in his international career, with opportunities expected to grow if he continues to perform at club level. For many players, breaking into the Super Eagles squad represents a major achievement, given the depth of talent available to Nigeria.

The four-nation invitational tournament provided a platform not only for competition but also for experimentation, as the team assessed new options and combinations.

For Otele, who made history as the first Nigerian to score for Hamburg, and his fellow debutants, it offered a first taste of international football and a chance to stake their claim for future selection.

As Nigeria looks ahead to upcoming fixtures, attention may turn to how these new players integrate into the squad. For Otele, however, the immediate focus remains on building upon what he has described as a lifelong ambition realised on the international stage.
