Orlando Pirates have reached the CAF Champions League group stages after a 5-0 aggregate victory over Namibian champions African Stars, securing an estimated R12 million in prize money.
The qualification is the club’s second appearance in the group phase in four seasons and provides a significant financial lift for the Soweto side. Pirates had struggled to move beyond the preliminary rounds in previous campaigns, but this time progressed comfortably to the next stage.
The Buccaneers’ success gives Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team the opportunity to build on its domestic achievements while challenging for honours in Africa’s leading club competition.
Pirates’ group-stage reward is approximately R12 million. That figure is around R2 million more than the club would have received for winning the MTN8 final, underlining the financial importance of their continental progress.
The club can increase its earnings further by advancing through the competition. Pirates’ ambitions will extend beyond simply reaching the group phase, with a place in the final and a first CAF Champions League title among their major targets for the season.
The elimination of reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns also gives Orlando Pirates an opportunity to carry South Africa’s hopes in the tournament. However, the group stage will provide a demanding test against some of the strongest teams on the continent.
Pirates must play six group-stage matches and finish in the top two of their section to reach the quarter-finals. Progress beyond that stage would bring additional financial rewards and move the Sea Robbers closer to their objective of being crowned African champions.
Ouaddou’s side will hope the strength and depth of an improved squad can help it cope with the demands of the competition. Qualification has secured a valuable financial reward, but the next challenge will be turning that platform into a sustained run towards the knockout rounds.
