Orlando Pirates will rely on goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi and striker Yanela Mbuthuma to deliver crucial performances when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 18:00.
The match will be decided by the collective efforts of both teams, but the contribution of the three Orlando Pirates players could have a significant influence on the outcome.
Chaine’s responsibility will extend beyond stopping shots. The goalkeeper must also organise the defensive line and provide stability at the back against a Sundowns attack featuring Tashreeq Matthews and Brayan Leon.
The Bloemfontein-born goalkeeper has been one of Orlando Pirates’ most dependable performers for the past three seasons. He has made 11 saves in 5 local matches, producing a save percentage of 91.7%.
Chaine has also recorded 4 clean sheets while conceding just 1 goal. His distribution from deep positions has been equally effective, with an 83.6% pass completion rate after completing 1,011 passes. Those performances have earned him an average match rating of 7.44.
Mokobodi faces midfield test
In midfield, Mokobodi will be tasked with helping Orlando Pirates compete against Teboho Mokoena, regarded as one of Africa’s best midfielders.
The 23-year-old has made an impressive start, completing 58 of 64 passes for a passing accuracy of 91% on his debut. He has also contributed defensively, averaging 3 tackles, 4 interceptions and 3 recoveries per match.
Mokobodi’s ability to regain possession and use the ball efficiently could allow Orlando Pirates to control the centre of the pitch. It may also help them limit Sundowns’ opportunities to launch dangerous counter-attacks.
His responsibilities will cover both attacking and defensive phases as part of the tactical plan developed with assistant coach Rayan Jacobs on the bench.
Mbuthuma’s work could create openings
Mbuthuma will lead the attacking effort and carry much of the responsibility in the final third. The young forward has answered early-season criticism by scoring 2 goals in 6 league appearances.
His influence has also been evident in his chance creation. Mbuthuma has produced 11 chances, more than any other Orlando Pirates player, while drawing pressure from defenders and winning 4 fouls.
The striker’s movement and physical work can create space and goalscoring opportunities for Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi. His pressing and ability to occupy the Sundowns defence could prove important in the final.
Mbuthuma’s development has also been recognised through his recent senior Bafana Bafana call-up.
