Onyeka strikes as Coventry edge Derby in five-goal thriller

Coventry City moved a step closer to securing the EFL Championship title with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Derby County at the CBS Arena, in a match that saw Frank Onyeka score his first goal of the season.

The midfielder, on loan from Premier League side Brentford, opened the scoring early on Good Friday, setting the tone for a closely contested encounter that kept supporters on edge until the final whistle.

Onyeka broke the deadlock in the 12th minute, finishing confidently from inside the penalty area to give the home side an early advantage. It marked a significant moment in his campaign, as he found the net for the first time this season while continuing to play a key role in Coventry’s midfield.

Derby County, who came into the fixture sitting eighth in the table, responded before the interval. Ben Brereton Díaz equalised in the 38th minute, ensuring the sides went into half-time level at 1–1.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams pushing for control. Coventry regained the lead in the 68th minute through Jack Rudoni, whose effort restored hope among the home supporters.

However, Derby were quick to respond once again. Brereton Díaz scored his second of the match from the penalty spot in the 77th minute, levelling the score and setting up a tense conclusion.

Coventry, though, were not to be denied. Just three minutes after Derby’s equaliser, Rudoni struck again to complete his brace and secure all three points for the hosts in what proved to be a hard-fought contest.

The result has significant implications at the top of the table. Coventry now sit 11 points clear of second-placed Millwall with only six matches remaining, placing them in a strong position to clinch the Championship title and confirm automatic promotion to the Premier League.

For Onyeka, the goal caps a positive spell during his loan, with his performances contributing to the team’s balance and defensive strength in midfield. His influence has been evident as Coventry continue their push towards what could be a title-winning season.

With momentum on their side and a commanding lead established, Coventry’s focus now turns to maintaining consistency in the closing stages of the campaign as they look to complete their return to the top flight.
