Onana faces possible Cameroon ban after criticism of football leadership

Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana could face a lengthy suspension from the national team following controversial remarks about the country’s football leadership, according to reports.

The issue is expected to be discussed at the next general assembly of Cameroonian Football Federation, where disciplinary action against the 30-year-old is being considered.

Among the options reportedly under review is a multi-year ban from international duty.

The situation stems from comments made by Onana during a TikTok live stream in mid-April, in which he criticised the management of the national team. He said:

“I have no problems with the national team, I have no problem with Fecafoot. I disagree with an individual who is using Fecafoot and the national team to settle scores. ”

He added: “If you don’t agree, we’ll kick you off. ”

Those remarks are believed to have strained relations further between the goalkeeper and federation president Samuel Eto’o, with whom he has had previous disagreements.

According to reports, Eto’o initially considered imposing disciplinary measures directly.

However, he was reportedly advised against doing so by those close to him, amid concerns it could be viewed as an arbitrary decision and damage his public image.

Onana’s case will now be handled through official federation processes, with a final decision expected after internal discussions.

The dispute reflects a deeper and long-running breakdown in the relationship between the player and the national team setup.

Following the 2022 World Cup, Onana stepped away from international football after a disagreement with then head coach Rigobert Song.

He later reversed that decision in September 2023, returning to the squad.

However, tensions resurfaced during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he lost his place as first-choice goalkeeper amid further disagreements, including with federation leadership.

More recently, Onana has not been included in national team selections, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and a training camp held in March.

The absence followed a change in coaching staff, with Marc Brys replaced by David Pagou.

Sources close to the player suggest that a potential suspension may have limited practical impact.

His entourage indicated that he “ is no longer focused on the national team” and “doesn’t foresee a return as long as the current management remains in place ,” pointing to an already fractured relationship.

As the situation develops, the future of one of Cameroon’s most high-profile players remains uncertain, with the possibility that his international career could effectively come to an end amid ongoing tensions with the federation.
