Omar Kamal Abdel Wahed says he turned down a financial offer of more than 80 million Egyptian pounds from Pyramids before choosing to join Al-Ahly, insisting that money was not the deciding factor behind his move.
The current Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab player and former Al-Ahly defender also rejected claims that he had been involved in a dispute with Imam Ashour, saying his hand injury was caused by a fall and not a confrontation with the Al-Ahly midfielder.
Kamal discussed his time at Al-Ahly during a television interview, including the circumstances surrounding his move to the Cairo club and his eventual departure.
He said Sami Qumsan was among those who recommended that he join Al-Ahly. Kamal also explained that his eventual departure from the club was not the result of a technical decision.
The player revealed that Pyramids had approached him with a major financial proposal during the period when he was considering his next move. The offer, he said, was worth more than 80 million pounds.
Despite the significant difference between the two offers, Kamal decided to wait for an opportunity to return to Al-Ahly, the club where he had developed as a youth player.
He said the financial value of Al-Ahly’s proposal was considerably lower than what Pyramids had offered. According to Kamal, it amounted to about 30% of the Pyramids offer.
Nevertheless, he chose the Al-Ahly shirt, making his decision despite the substantial financial difference between the two clubs.
Kamal also addressed the issue of money still owed to him by Al-Ahly. He said he had yet to receive some of his outstanding financial dues, while stressing that he had not asked the club for them.
The player nevertheless maintained that he remains entitled to the money and said players’ financial rights at the club do not disappear.
Kamal then turned to reports about an alleged disagreement with Imam Ashour, which had been linked to the injury he suffered to his hand.
He denied that there had been any confrontation between the pair and said their relationship remained good.
“My relationship with Imam Ashour is good, and my hand injury was due to a fall.”
Kamal said the heavy pressure Ashour was facing on social media at the time had helped fuel inaccurate reports about the incident. He insisted there had never been a problem between the two players.
He also recalled seeing Ashour after the midfielder returned from a national team camp. At that point, Ashour was still undergoing rehabilitation.
Kamal praised Ashour’s approach to his training programme, saying the player was committed to his work and did not fall into the category of players who neglect their training responsibilities.

His comments put an end, according to his account, to speculation about a disagreement with Ashour while also explaining why he rejected a substantially larger financial offer from Pyramids in favour of joining Al-Ahly.
