Nigerian defensive midfielder Olawale Onanuga has left Azerbaijani side Kapaz PFK and is now a free agent after his contract with the Premyer Liqa club came to an end. The 28-year-old, who was born in Lagos and stands at 1.80m, departs with an estimated market value of €300,000.
Onanuga, a right-footed specialist in the holding midfield role, exits Kapaz for the second time in his career, having rejoined the club in 2023. He first moved to the Ganja-based side from Albanian outfit KS Kastrioti in 2023 and returned again in 2025 following a brief spell away, each time signing on a free transfer.
During his time in Azerbaijan’s top flight, Onanuga built a reputation as a consistent presence in midfield, making 55 league appearances for Kapaz and scoring three goals, while adding one assist. He also featured in the Azerbaijan Cup, where he contributed two assists in five games, underlining his ability to screen the defence and link play in possession.
Before establishing himself in the Premyer Liqa, Onanuga accumulated significant experience in Albania’s Kategoria Superiore with Kastrioti, where he played 58 league matches, and in Israel’s Liga Leumit with Bnei Yehuda, adding 17 league appearances. That journey through three different competitions has given him close to 10,000 minutes of senior football across league and cup action.
Onanuga’s departure from Kapaz PFK on 16 July 2026 leaves the Nigeria midfielder unattached and available to sign as a free agent ahead of the new campaign.
