Orlando Pirates midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has underlined his preference for playing in a central attacking role after delivering a standout performance in his side’s emphatic victory over Golden Arrows.
The 20-year-old scored twice as Pirates secured a dominant 5-0 win at the Orlando Amstel Arena, a result that keeps their pursuit of the league title alive. Despite the comprehensive victory, Pirates remain second in the standings behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns maintained their position at the top of the table with a narrow 1-0 win over Durban City, courtesy of a single goal from Katlego Ntsabeleng.
Mofokeng’s performance against Golden Arrows continues a rich vein of form for the young attacker. His brace means he has now scored five goals across his last two matches, while also securing back-to-back Man of the Match awards. Over the course of the current Betway Premiership season, he has contributed seven goals and five assists in 19 appearances.
Speaking after the match on SuperSport TV, Mofokeng was candid about the position he feels brings out the best in his abilities. The attacking midfielder suggested that operating centrally allows him to exploit tight spaces more effectively, rather than being deployed in a wider role that demands extensive running.
“I think the style we play here at Pirates, a 10 is suitable for me,” he said.
“I’m not really someone who likes running. I’m someone who prefers tiny spaces.
“So, I think number 10 position is fine for me.
“Even on the wing I like to play but the best for me is the 10 position.”
His comments come as Pirates continue to push for domestic success, with Mofokeng emerging as one of their most influential players in recent weeks. His ability to find space and create scoring opportunities has added a new dimension to the team’s attacking play.
Still early in his career, the Bafana Bafana international is rapidly establishing himself as a key figure both at club level and on the international stage. His recent performances are likely to strengthen his case for a more permanent role in the central attacking position he clearly favours.
With the title race intensifying, Pirates will be hoping Mofokeng can maintain his form as they attempt to close the gap on Sundowns.
