Ernest Nuamah scored twice in the opening half as Lyon produced a convincing 4-0 victory over Rennes in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
The Ghana forward struck in the seventh and 30th minutes at Groupama Stadium to give Lyon a commanding advantage before Zachary Athekame and Corentin Tolisso added further goals after the interval.
Nuamah’s contribution helped Lyon take control of the fifth matchday fixture early, with his two goals putting the home side in a strong position before half-time.
The 24-year-old’s double takes his Ligue 1 total to three goals this season. He had previously scored against Auxerre on 4 September, while he also supplied an assist for Felix Bacher in Lyon’s 3-1 victory over the same opponents.
The performance against Rennes was Nuamah’s first two-goal game in Ligue 1 and his second brace for Lyon.
His previous double for the French club came on 13 March 2025, when Lyon faced FCSB in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.
Nuamah scored Lyon’s second and fourth goals in that match, finding the net in the 37th and 88th minutes as his side also won 4-0.
Against Rennes, the Ghanaian needed considerably less time to make his mark.
His first goal came after only seven minutes, giving Lyon an early lead. He then doubled their advantage in the 30th minute, leaving the hosts in control before the break.
Lyon strengthened their position shortly after half-time when Athekame scored in the 48th minute. Tolisso completed the scoring in the 76th minute to confirm a four-goal victory.
The result also adds another two-goal performance to Nuamah’s career record.
Before moving to Lyon, he recorded two braces while playing for FC Nordsjælland.
His first came in the Danish Cup against Aarhus Fremad on 28 February 2023. Nuamah scored in the 17th and 34th minutes of that match.
Less than a month later, he produced another two-goal display in the Danish league against Brøndby.
On 19 March 2023, Nuamah scored both of Nordsjælland’s goals in a 2-1 victory, finding the net in the 52nd and 90th minutes.
That means the Rennes match represents the fourth time in his career that the Ghanaian has scored twice in a game.
For Lyon, the performance against Rennes continued their scoring form and followed a first half in which they had already established a substantial advantage.
Nuamah’s early goals were central to that start, with the forward giving his team a two-goal cushion before Athekame and Tolisso completed the rout.
The result also takes Nuamah’s Ligue 1 tally to three goals for the campaign. His previous goal had come against Auxerre earlier in September, while his assist in that same match contributed to Lyon’s 3-1 win.
His brace against Rennes therefore marks a notable addition to his league record and his first two-goal performance in France’s top flight.
By the time the final whistle sounded, Lyon had secured a 4-0 victory, with Nuamah’s first-half double providing the foundation for a comprehensive win.
The Ghanaian’s two goals also extended his record of braces to four across his career, with two having come during his time at Nordsjælland and two for Lyon.
For Lyon, the emphatic result maintained their scoring momentum, while Nuamah left the match with two goals to his name after making an immediate impact in the opening half.
