Nigeria-eligible Noah Atubolu sparks transfer battle across Europe

Interest is growing in Noah Atubolu, with several Premier League sides monitoring the SC Freiburg goalkeeper, who remains eligible to represent Nigeria at international level.

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga this season, attracting attention not only for his consistency between the posts but also for his international eligibility, a factor that has sparked interest across both club and national team discussions.

Among the clubs closely following his situation is Tottenham Hotspur, who are reportedly considering Atubolu as a possible replacement for current first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, should he depart in the next transfer window.

Chelsea FC have also been linked with the shot-stopper, although their current transfer ban could complicate any immediate move.

Meanwhile, interest is not limited to England, with Inter Milan also said to be monitoring the player.

Atubolu, who joined Freiburg in July 2021, has steadily developed into the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. He has featured prominently this season, making more than 20 appearances in the Bundesliga as Freiburg push for a strong finish, currently sitting eighth in the table.

His performances have been key to the club’s campaign, with his shot-stopping ability and composure drawing praise and increasing his market value.

Freiburg are understood to value the goalkeeper at around €30 million, while broader estimates place his market worth at approximately €20 million.

With a contract running until June 2027, the German club are under no immediate pressure to sell, but continued interest from top European sides could test their resolve in upcoming transfer windows.

Beyond club football, Atubolu’s international future remains a subject of intrigue. Born in Germany but of Igbo descent, he is eligible to represent Nigeria national football team.

Although he has represented Germany at various youth levels, the goalkeeper is yet to make a senior appearance for the European nation, leaving the door open for a potential switch to Nigeria.

For the Super Eagles, the emergence of a young, in-form goalkeeper playing at a high level in Europe could be significant, especially as the team continues to build for future competitions.

Atubolu’s situation presents both club and country with an opportunity.

For interested teams, he represents a long-term investment in a key position.

For Nigeria, he remains a potential addition to their pool of international talent.
