Nigeria defender Emmanuel Fernandez thrilled after debut

Emmanuel Fernandez has described his debut goal for Nigeria as an “honoured” moment after helping the Super Eagles secure a 2-2 draw against Jordan in an international friendly on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old defender, who plays for Rangers, scored Nigeria’s second goal in the match against Al-Nashama, capping an impressive early showing for the national team. It was his second appearance for the Super Eagles, having made his debut just days earlier.

Fernandez, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, was handed his first start by head coach Éric Chelle after featuring off the bench in last week’s game against Iran. His performance against Jordan not only included a goal but also a solid defensive display, as he contributed to keeping the opposition at bay for much of the contest.

Speaking after the match, Fernandez expressed his pride at representing Nigeria and making an immediate impact.

“Honoured and grateful to play for Nigeria. First start, first goal. Enjoyable experience,” he wrote on X.

The defender’s rapid rise into the national setup has been notable. After receiving his first call-up, he wasted little time in establishing himself as a promising option in the squad. His composure in defence and ability to contribute offensively were evident in Tuesday’s match, where Nigeria twice found the net in a closely contested encounter.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, used the fixture as part of their preparations, with Chelle continuing to assess new players and combinations within his squad. Fernandez’s performance is likely to strengthen his case for further involvement in upcoming matches, as the team builds towards future competitions.

Despite the draw, there were positives for Nigeria, particularly in the integration of new players like Fernandez. His goal highlighted his ability to make an impact in key moments, while his defensive contributions underscored his versatility.

For Fernandez, the experience marks a significant milestone in his career. Having grown up in England, his decision to represent Nigeria reflects a connection to his heritage, and his early performances suggest he could play an important role for the national side going forward.

As Nigeria continues to develop under Chelle’s leadership, Fernandez’s emergence offers encouragement for fans looking to the future. His debut goal and assured displays hint at a player capable of becoming a regular presence in the Super Eagles squad.

With more fixtures ahead, attention will now turn to whether Fernandez can build on this promising start and cement his place in the team.
