Ngal’Ayel Mukau says his only disappointment from making his World Cup debut against Cristiano Ronaldo was missing out on swapping shirts with his childhood idol.
The Lille defender, who describes Ronaldo as his “idol”, played his first ever World Cup match directly up against the Portugal great – a moment he regards as the standout highlight of his career so far.
“J’ai joue mon premier match de Coupe du monde contre mon idole, Cristiano Ronaldo,” Mukau said, explaining that facing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on the opening matchday of the tournament had fulfilled one of his biggest professional dreams.
The prestigious showdown, which came at the highest level of international football, marked a milestone in the young Congolese defender’s rapid rise and is seen by the player as the defining moment of his World Cup adventure.
Shirt-swap hope denied amid post-match frenzy
Despite the pride he felt at sharing the pitch with Ronaldo, Mukau admitted he was left with a small regret at full-time.
He had hoped to secure the Portugal captain’s shirt at the final whistle but was forced to abandon the idea because of the intense attention around the forward in the immediate aftermath of the game.
“A la fin, je n’ai pas pu chercher son maillot parce que tout le monde le sollicitait,” he said, adding that Ronaldo also appeared visibly frustrated as he left the field, which further reduced the chances of a shirt exchange.
Mukau’s disappointment, though minor compared with the significance of the occasion, underlined how much the encounter meant to him personally, having grown up admiring the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star.
Rising Lille talent determined to continue development
Mukau’s World Cup performances have attracted interest from several clubs during the current transfer window, with his displays on the global stage reinforcing his reputation as one of the most promising Congolese talents of his generation.
However, the defender is determined to continue his development at Lille, where he believes he can build on the experience gained at international level.
The young Dogue is viewed as a player of growing importance at the northern club, and those around him see this World Cup campaign as a key step in his progression.
Now more mature and battle-hardened by exposure to the highest level of the game, Mukau is seen as a rising prospect who intends to capitalise on his momentum rather than be distracted by speculation over his future.
His World Cup debut may have left him without Ronaldo’s shirt, but the defender’s performances have strengthened his status as an emerging figure to watch in both Ligue 1 and on the international scene.
