Newcastle have not opened talks for Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney

Speculation over Ivan Toney’s future has resurfaced after reports linked the Al-Ahli forward with a possible move to Newcastle United during the January 2027 transfer window.

However, Newcastle have not yet opened discussions to sign the England international, despite his name being associated with the club in recent reports. There has been no official confirmation that negotiations have begun, leaving any prospect of a transfer at the level of speculation.

The club’s ability to pursue the deal could also be affected by the financial limits facing manager Matthias Jaissle’s side ahead of the winter window. Newcastle’s manager has warned that the club’s January business will be shaped by financial regulations and the budget available to the club.

Speaking before the match against Everton, the manager said January recruitment would have to comply with the relevant financial rules. He stressed that the transfer window was not a “wish list” for the manager and that any potential moves would be coordinated with the recruitment team.

Those comments underlined the difficulty Newcastle could face in completing an expensive deal while remaining within their financial commitments. The manager’s wishes alone will not be enough to secure a new signing, with the club’s budget and wider obligations also needing to be considered.

The financial gap between Toney’s current package and Newcastle’s reported salary structure is another potential obstacle. Reports suggest the striker earns close to £500,000 a week at Al-Ahli, while Newcastle’s reported wage ceiling is around £150,000 a week.

That difference would make any attempt to bring Toney to Newcastle considerably more complicated, even if the English club were to develop a firm interest in the player. The figures have not been presented as part of an official offer or negotiation, and no agreement has been reached between the clubs.

There is also no official indication that Toney is close to leaving Al-Ahli. His future will depend on whether concrete movement develops during the period ahead, rather than on the current reports linking him with Newcastle United.

Until reliable information emerges about formal negotiations, the possibility of Toney’s departure remains unconfirmed. For now, Newcastle have yet to make an official approach, while the financial difference between the two clubs’ reported wage positions remains a significant barrier to any potential transfer.
