Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign teenage Guinean midfielder Ousmane Diabaté from Turkish club Gençlerbirliği, with the player expected to remain in Turkey on loan to continue his development.
The 18-year-old defensive midfielder has chosen Newcastle’s project despite interest from several other European clubs, including Tottenham, Fenerbahce and Brentford.
Diabaté is understood to have received three other concrete proposals before deciding to join the Premier League club. Newcastle’s plans for his development ultimately convinced the youngster to choose the Magpies.
The midfielder has reportedly travelled to England for a medical on Tyneside ahead of completing the move.
The agreement represents another significant step in the rapid rise of Diabaté, who only moved to Gençlerbirliği from Guinean side Académie SOAR in December 2025.
Newcastle are reportedly paying about €5m for the teenager, although the information supplied does not state an official transfer fee.
Once the transfer is completed, Diabaté is expected to return to Gençlerbirliği on loan.
That arrangement would allow the young midfielder to continue playing regular football in Turkey while remaining part of Newcastle’s longer-term plans.
Diabaté’s progress has been swift. After beginning his senior career in Guinea with Académie SOAR, he moved to Gençlerbirliği and quickly attracted attention from clubs outside Turkey.
His performances have now taken him onto the radar of some of Europe’s better-known sides, with Newcastle eventually winning the race for his signature.
Tottenham were among the clubs monitoring the midfielder, while Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Premier League side Brentford were also reported to be interested.
Reports from Turkey had indicated that negotiations were already under way before the latest development.
Turkish outlet Fotospor and journalist Reşat Can Özbudak had reported on Tuesday that discussions were taking place between the relevant parties.
Özbudak has since reported that Diabaté travelled to Tyneside for his medical, putting him close to becoming a Newcastle player.
For Newcastle, the move appears to fit a strategy of identifying promising young talent and allowing players to continue their development through regular competitive football.
Rather than immediately bringing Diabaté into the Premier League environment, the proposed loan back to Gençlerbirliği would give him further experience in Turkey’s top flight.
The Guinean’s profile has also made the deal particularly notable from an African football perspective.
His move from Académie SOAR to Turkey came less than a year before his proposed transfer to Newcastle, highlighting how quickly his career has progressed.
Diabaté’s ability to play as a defensive midfielder has made him an attractive prospect, with Newcastle now preparing to take responsibility for the next stage of his development.
